Hawkins started her career in broadcasting with ITN as a newsreader and reporter for LBC Radio in 1999. She was one of the first journalists on the scene of the deadly Paddington rail accident, providing live updates. She moved to ITV Meridian in the South East of England in January 2000, where she co-hosted the hour-long current affairs show The Big Story.
Hawkins has been a co-anchor of ITV Meridian’s main news program Meridian Tonight since October 2003. She also appeared on the ITV News Channel as a presenter. She showed a number of pan-regional documentaries at Meridian, including the half-hour special Britain on the Move. Hawkins co-hosted The London Boat Show for ITV in 2007. Hawkins left Meridian in December 2006 and joined Sky News in January 2007, where she co-hosted Sunrise with Eamonn Holmes every Monday through Thursday. She left the channel in March 2014.
Hawkins was announced as a host on the ITV Breakfast show Good Morning Britain on March 3, 2014. She last appeared on Sky News Sunrise on March 6, 2014, and debuted on Good Morning Britain on April 28, 2014, co-hosting the show with Ben Shephard, Sean Fletcher, and Susanna Reid from 6:00 a.m. to 8.30 a.m. every day except Thursdays. Hawkins’ last performance before going on maternity leave was on January 22, 2015; she returned on June 15, 2015. Hawkins has been a newsreader on Good Morning Britain four mornings a week since 2017 and has filled in as a key presenter during vacations and absences.
